Writing Tip #39

Take the thing you love to do and temper it.

I did this with my upcoming novel, Broken. I tried to take things I rely on, that come naturally and that are part of my storytelling process, and toss them out completely or reduce them. Not simply for the sake of doing it. But to stop relying on them like a crutch and to avoid doing the same old thing with each subsequent story.

Two examples are the use of italics and interior monologue. I frequently use both in my novels. But with Broken, I decided to try and avoid both. It was hard to do because I’m so used to putting these throughout a novel. I feel it worked, especially for this particular story.
It’s easy for writers to get into habits with their writing. Sometimes you need to change those habits for the sake of discovering new ones.
