Million Dollar Idea

Just came up with a million dollar idea tonight.

Well, maybe not million dollar.
At this point in my career, it might be worth . . . well, let’s just say a little lower.
Or a lot lower.
But it’s an idea, nevertheless.
Woooppdeeedoo. Another writer with another idea. Yep. Big deal. Who cares.
I’d like to tell anybody who reads this the idea, but it will have to wait.
The reality is that I’m working on two projects now and already know what I desperately want to start writing next. Then there’s that other project. And, oh yeah, there’s that big epic series idea.
Ideas. If I were J.K. Rowling, they would be sacred. But I’m a guy with a last name that rhymes with trasher.
I’m not complaining. Hey–I’m in the writing pool. I’m in the creative ocean. I’m doing my thing and I’m thankful–thankful-thankful to do it.
So this idea–it’s not new. But the frame and structure. That’s new.
The why is new.
The reason is new.
And it came from my love of music (not a new thing) and from Twitter (Heaven help us).
It’s an idea. But like anything, it’s a chunk of me. A VERY BIG chunk of me. (yes, I can see you now thinking major failure).
But it’s got possibility because of several things.
A) the story has been with me for some time, about 38 years or so.
B) there are a lot and I mean a lot of people who can relate to THIS story. Maybe nothing else I write but this one they’ll be able to get.
C) I’m learning with each story I write. 41 or 42 novels written, I’m learning. Still slowly, still with so much to learn. But I’m getting better, bit by bit.
What’s this mean?
It goes on the idea wall. It gets a title and a big, yellow post-it note. And then it will wait. And simmer.
Maybe it will come out. We’ll see.
The beauty of creating is the possibility. I love it. I absolutely love it. The first page, the first possibility, the first moment the plot kicks in.
I keep trying.
And yes, I’m thankful.
The ideas keep flowing. And maybe, one day, with great fortune–well, maybe it will just be that million dollar idea.

  1. I was well aware that you had written numerous books. I never realized you had 40 under your belt. That is an imaginative conquest in itself.

Although fame and fortune would be a nice testament to the writing…
Then again you see writers such as Edgar Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft who never found fame until after they died.

I'm almost betting whether fame finds you or not, you can't see yourself never writing. I think something comes alive in us with that first book, that hint of a whole undiscovered world within us.

As for the newest idea, you have me intrigued. My patience will be sorely tested waiting with bated breath to see what you come up with (chuckling). By the way, I'm one of those writers who truly believe a book finds us. We are simply the authors who give it life.

Enjoy your weekend dear friend! (Hugs)Indigo

  2. You ever fear that your idea wall will suddenly burst into flames? Or sucked into a black hole on your computer? Or be lost among a million pages of notebooks? I do. It's a nightmare! My '09 idea book is filling fast and each aching to be written. Cheers to you on taking the reigns on a big one and being so passionate about it. Keep us in the loop!

  3. Hello.
I recently discovered Ghostwriter while meandering thru the Christian fiction section while my kids ravaged the teen section. I got it home and began reading while I had the house to myself…and a few chapters in, realized it wasn't the kind of book I should read while alone! ha ha – it is great and has my attention…but I ensure that my husband is near enough to touch while making my way thru it! Thanks so much for sharing your ideas with us all!

  4. Thanks Indigo. I believe books do find us–my problem is so many keep showing up on my doorstep! Cory–I'm paranoid about my manuscripts and keep them saved in a couple places. As for the ideas–well, if it's really THAT good, it'll stay in your heart and soul. Bina–so glad you discovered Ghostwriter. My books are all diverse so I hope you get a chance to check them out!
